Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a spectrum of conditions associated with sudden reduced blood flow to the heart, including conditions such as myocardial infarction (heart attack) and unstable angina. Timely and effective management of ACS is critical in improving patient outcomes and reducing mortality. Emergency nurses, as part of the healthcare team, play an essential role in the rapid assessment, diagnosis, and management of ACS in the emergency department.
At University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, emergency nurses are often the first healthcare professionals to assess and stabilize patients with suspected ACS. However, the role of emergency nurses in managing ACS—ranging from performing triage, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and educating patients—remains underexplored. Understanding the role of emergency nurses in ACS management can help optimize their contribution to early intervention and improve patient care in this critical setting.
While emergency nurses are involved in managing patients with ACS, their roles and responsibilities in this regard may not be fully understood or standardized. In University College Hospital, Ibadan, emergency nurses may be underutilized or inadequately supported in their roles during the management of ACS. The lack of clarity in their specific duties and potential gaps in training may impact the quality of care provided to ACS patients.
This study seeks to explore and evaluate the role of emergency nurses in managing ACS, identify barriers to optimal care delivery, and provide recommendations for enhancing their effectiveness.
This study will focus on emergency nurses at University College Hospital, Ibadan, evaluating their knowledge, skills, and roles in managing ACS. Limitations may include variability in individual nurses’ experience and the hospital’s resources, which may affect the consistency of care provided.
